Frozen Ferns

Bracken Ferns dominate this little portion of the forest floor in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. The earthy brown tones give the scene a wholesome and warm feel. Photographically these ferns have been frozen in time, but within a few short weeks of the making of this photo, the entire area would be mashed under feet of winter snow truly freezing these ferns. For nearly a half a year or more, they will not see the light of day. During that time the spores released from these will start their life in a frozen world and emerge in spring ready to lavish in the relative warmth and complete its cycle of life.
